Identification of Technical and Ergonomic Requirements for Full-Scale Simulation with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Intensive care medicine treats patients who may suffer from severe cardiac or pulmonary disorders. For these patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be a life-saving therapy. The application of ECMO requires an interdisciplinary and highly specialised team. The treatment must therefore be practised as a team. However, there are currently no suitable simulators available that enable interdisciplinary ECMO trainings. In this study, ergonomic and technical requirements for the development of a full-scale ECMO simulator are analysed. The development of the requirements is based on the process of user-centred product development. It is structured into (1.) carrying out expert interviews to identify relevant work processes, (2.) the analysis and visualisation of the work processes and (3.) deriving requirements together in an expert workshop based on the visualised work processes. A total of 15 work processes were identified as relevant and then observed open and non-participatory. On this basis, 39 requirements were derived. These requirements now need to be implemented in a prototype and tested by additional users.
