This study aims to investigate the effects of different chronotypes, time periods, and contextual transitions on driving fatigue and performance. A total of 16 participants were recruited for a 2 (chronotype) * 2 (time period) * 4 (context) mixed-factorial design experiment. Participants were required to react to sudden events while driving normally and to record their fatigue levels every 5 min. The results of the study indicate that under fatigue conditions, night-oriented drivers exhibit a greater attentional load in driving behavior. Furthermore, based on several driving indicators, it may be suggested that complex road environments demand increased attention. Transitioning from driving in complex scenes to monotonous scenes shows a temporary increase in fatigue levels, indicating a potential influence of contextual transitions on fatigue levels.
