The Acceptability of Automated Vehicles by Other Road Users: Effects According to the Type of Vehicles

Automated Vehicles (AVs), also known as driverless vehicles, are a category of vehicles in which some or all driving decisions are made without human intervention. In addition to the benefits enabled by AVs, such as access to a dedicated vehicle fleet and sharing among users, AVs must be considered in interaction with all forms of mobility: other vehicles, notably motorists (Other Drivers), active mobility such as Cycling or Scootering, and Pedestrians as well. We are interested in the potential interaction, in a future mobility environment, between these different users and AVs through the dissemination of videos and through mental projection. Indeed, it is necessary to anticipate the impact of AVs deployment in the road environment, not only from the perspective of AVs users, but also from the standpoint of other road users who will be required to share this common space and interact together. This study focuses on the acceptability of these other users regarding different types of AVs (i.e., Shuttle, Droid, RoboTaxi, Cyber Valet). We are interested in the assessment made by these users in terms of interaction preferences. Our results show an overall positive evaluation following the observation of these AVs, with preferences varying according to the type of users. Notably, regarding the question of interaction priority, Other Drivers consider themselves less prioritized in their interactions with AVs than Cyclists or Pedestrians.
