The study explores the implementation of highlighting display in autonomous vehicles windshield to enhance reaction, acceptance and workload. The display colors the surface of surrounding vehicles based on their safety levels, aiming to improve occupants’ understanding of the autonomous system's awareness. Research investigates the effectiveness of the highlighting display in reducing anxiety and workload, increasing acceptance (especially safety), and enhancing response capabilities in takeover situations. Highlighting display enhanced reaction efficiency and had a positive psychological impact on users. However, this did not reduce the workload, which seems to be caused by the highlighting display reducing the sense of depth.
