Bacteriophages, also known as phages, are viruses that reproduce only in bacterial cells and kill bacterial hosts. A recent surge in interest in bacteriophages has occurred due to the rising concern of multidrug resistance and deadly bacterial infections. Phage therapy uses bacteriophages to reduce infections caused by pathogenic bacteria. Due to issues with regulation, host range restriction, bacterial resistance to phages, production, bacterial lysis side effects, and transport, bacteriophage treatment is still not widely used in medicine. Recent developments in synthetic biology, macromolecule delivery, and biotechnology can address these technological obstacles, including next-generation sequencing. Currently, few commercial products are popular in the animal and fisheries sector and are in current practice. Bacteriophage treatment cannot be effectively advanced into clinical settings without combining these scientific endeavors with rigorous and pragmatic methods at the academic, commercial, and regulatory levels. In this chapter, the practical aspects of phage treatment are highlighted. Furthermore, current advancements in phage treatment, including biological processes, clinical uses, and ongoing challenges, have been addressed.
