This chapter explores humility as an essential ingredient of inclusive leadership, closely intertwined with self-awareness and empathy. Drawing from Confucian philosophy, Platonic dialogues, and contemporary leadership research, it weaves together enduring traditions of humaneness, respect, and relational practice. It highlights Edgar Schein’s concept of here-and-now humility, along with insights from Hess, Ludwig, and Xu, to show how humility functions across cultures and organizational settings. The chapter examines how humility is reinforced in Japanese corporate environments, shaped by power dynamics in China, and often overlooked in U.S. performance-driven cultures. A central case study focuses on the relational aspects of humility, where a leader’s reluctance to engage a diverse group of stakeholders led to resistance, misalignment, and project delays. Through the coaching process, the chapter surfaces how humility can be strengthened and practiced in everyday leadership. It offers coaching tools and reflective questions to uncover subtle patterns and make space for new behaviors. In today’s polarized and fast-changing world, the chapter argues that humility is critical for navigating complexity and leading with inclusion.
