The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, responsible for the COVID-19 disease, has led to an increase in the number of people working from home and the amount of time spent on remote work activities. Hence, it becomes imperative to enhance the thermal and environmental comfort, given the heightened frequency of computer screen usage, compounded by the rise in heat sources within the environment. However, over the last few decades, there has been an increase in understanding modern sources of lower frequency radiation in and around building complexes, and their effects on inhabitants and their surroundings. Non-ionizing radiation (NIR) includes a variety of low-frequency electromagnetic radiation that is generated by a variety of sources, such as household appliances, Wi-Fi systems, cell phones, and other electronic devices. Additionally, urban morphology (UM) may also play a role in radiation exposure depending on factors such as population density, building distribution, and communications infrastructure. Thus, this article presents a preliminary study observing and analyzing aspects of the UM (surroundings), thermal characteristics and NIR levels in 13 home offices located in heat islands in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. The results demonstrate that all home offices presented temperatures and NIR levels above the recommended levels established by current standards and literature. Furthermore, in home offices located in heat islands, the combination of total built density, the roughness and height of tall buildings, and a low sky view factor provides evidence of thermal discomfort and elevated NIR intensity levels in these areas.
