Short-Term Social Media Abstinence and Self-monitoring Intervention: Higher Life Satisfaction and Positive Affects
摘要
The problematic use of social media has some negative effects on people’s lives. Based on Cognitive-behavioral therapy, a short-term social media abstinence intervention combined with self-monitoring was proposed. Unlike total abstinence, this short-term abstinence intervention only required a few hours away from social media each day. This paper conducted a 3×3 experiment under different intervention methods (CG: no intervention; EG1: abstinence; EG2: abstinence combined with self-monitoring) among participants with different procrastination levels (high, medium, low). Results showed subjects with a high procrastination level would have higher life satisfaction and positive affect under abstinence and self-monitoring conditions (EG2). Subjects would have a higher positive affect under the abstinence condition (EG1). This study also analyzed qualitative data and found both positive and negative influences of abstinence, which might originate from feelings and thoughts generated by substitution behaviors during the abstinence period, providing implications for the mechanism of abstinence effect.
