There is not a standard formula to diagnose an organization’s safety culture. Since an organization is a complex system with various interactions, each intervention will possess unique characteristics. This study aimed to present the outcomes of interventions conducted on four offshore production units (identified as A, B, C, and D) owned by a Brazilian oil and gas company. It investigated the influence of research conditions, including local conditions and researchers’ practices, on the success or failure of these interventions. To this end, the case study method was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative tools, to comprehend the characteristics of business processes, local work practices, and the environmental context. The study revealed that researchers’ practices, alongside unit characteristics and environmental, structural, technical, and organizational factors, guided the development and results of the interventions on the four offshore platforms. Additionally, it demonstrated how an adequate social construction ensured the success of these interventions. In conclusion, acknowledging the influence of the research conditions on the processes and results of the interventions emphasizes the importance of situated approaches. This allows researchers to better understand the circumstances and reflect on their own research practices.
