The purpose of this study is to explore ergonomic challenges in the design of valves for continuous process industries, focusing on FPSO platforms (Floating Production Storage and Offloading). Regulatory standards for valve positioning and access differ from the actual needs of operators and maintainers. To better align with user requirements, the objective is to evaluate the ergonomic aspects of the valve design process. A qualitative approach is employed in this project, which covers the period of September 2022 to March 2024 through case studies and participatory observation. It outlines valve categorization criteria based on functionality and maintenance frequency, dividing them into critical, non-critical, and rarely used categories. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating ergonomics from the early design stages and involving operators to ensure practical and safe solutions. Key findings include more adaptable and integrated categorization criteria, improved communication and collaboration between design and operational teams, and more effective design review sessions. The results show the impact of ergonomic involvement while identifying areas for refinement to enhance project outcomes and operational efficiency. Based on the findings of this study, it could be possible to design effective offshore platforms by continuously reflecting on and improving the ergonomic integration process.
