SwAge-Model – A Theoretical Model, Tool and Action Proposals for Dialogue and Discussion on Employee Work Situation and Career Development

Introduction: The average life expectancy is above 80 years of age in more than one in three countries on Earth. As well, the proportion of the population active in the labor force is ageing in many countries. It is important that individuals maintain good employability until an older age to make it possible and effective to extend working life and postpone the pension age as a measure to promote a sound social economy and to support welfare systems in different countries. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate organizational measures and suggestions to promote and make improvements for a healthy and sustainable working life for all ages in an extended working life. Method: The data were collected through both focus group interviews and individual interviews that included 145 participants in different sex, different positions, and professions. All the interviews were analyzed together by deductive content analysis. Result: The study identified several suggestions for measures and actions to increase employability sorted in the themes: Conclusion: This study identified several suggestions for measures and actions based on the spheres of determination in the theoretical SwAge-model (sustainable working life for all ages). Out of the result the SwAge-model could be used to identify the need and as a tool for dialogue and discussion on employees´ work situation and to implement different suggested measures for practical use in organizations and enterprises to perform a Healthy and Sustainable working life for employees in all ages.
