Affective Design of Shopping Bags to Promote Recycling
摘要
This study investigates how design manipulations, specifically in color, pattern, and shape, affect behavioral responses in the context of recycling. The experiment involved three independent variables, each at two levels: color, pattern, and shape of a bag. Eight different bags were evaluated using a between-subjects design. Ninety-six participants took part in a masked experiment that required them to evaluate fabric and scissors. Each participant was provided with an experimental bag containing all the necessary materials. After the experiment, participants were asked to dispose of the waste generated, with a trash bin placed at the exit of the room to facilitate disposal. One week later, participants were interviewed about their recycling behavior to determine what they had done with the bag. Recycling behavior was rated on a 4-point scale. The study validated that affective design features, such as color and pattern, significantly influence consumers’ recycling decisions. Additionally, the interaction between color and pattern on the shopping paper bag was found to be significant, indicating that the presence of both features enhances recycling behavior.
