In the first chapter of Part 3, the reasons why students do enrol in an elective LOTE subject are presented. These are explored through the overarching themes of ‘Ideal L2 Self’, ‘historical orientation’, ‘external influences’, and ‘subject perception’. It was found that for students who were studying an elective Languages subject, motivating factors outlined in Chap. 3 were common reasons for continuing their studies. These included the desire to travel, interest and enjoyment, positive encouragement from family, teachers and their own achievement in the subject, and perceived benefits of learning a language. Data from both the survey and focus groups are presented to showcase these findings from the book’s case study.
