The rituals of the pre-QinPre-Qin period include witchcraft rituals, sacrificial rituals, divination rituals, birth rituals, wedding rituals, and funeral rituals, etc. The poetry used for ritual performance activities or to express the content of rituals can be referred to as ritual poetry. As a reflection of social life, ritual poetry was a major part of pre-Qin literature. In the Chu Rhetoric, “the Li SaoLi Sao” uses the rituals of witchcraft and divination to structure the whole piece and present the mind; the Nine Songs uses the form of ritual songs to express emotions; and “the Invocation of the Soul” is a poeticisation of the ritual songs of the invocation in the ChuChu region.
