Western Himalayan cities are currently facing a multitude of challenges due to the pervasive effects of climate change. These challenges consist of water scarcity, deforestation, landslides, flash floods and rapid population growth. The escalation of these issues due to climate change is anticipated. Geoinformatics emerges as a crucial tool in assessing the vulnerability of mountain cities to climate change, aiming to mitigate the risks associated with these challenges. Geoinformatics, comprising global position systems (GPS), remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS) and facilitates the collection, storage, analysis, and visualization of geospatial data. The geospatial data can be used to identify regions’ susceptibility to climate change-related hazards, evaluate the impacts of these hazards in these regions, and develop mitigation strategies. This study explains the pivotal role of geoinformatics in evaluating the vulnerability of western Himalayan cities in India to climate change. It provides insights into the effects of climate change on these mountainous cities in the Indian region, as well as the challenges and opportunities inherent in utilizing geoinformatics for vulnerability assessment.
