This chapter introduces the theme of the book ‘Geoinformatics for Hilly Regions: Sustainable Human Settlements’. Human settlements in hilly regions pose unique challenges and opportunities for sustainable development due to their unique geomorphology, rugged topography, diverse microclimates, and susceptibility to natural hazards. Despite their environmental significance, unsustainable development practices in these areas are escalating and affecting their delicate ecological balance. This has necessitated the design and development of innovative approaches to urban planning, infrastructure development, and the management of natural and other resources. To address these challenges, there is a need to integrate geoinformatics, comprising Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial analysis, as a transformative solution to the problems faced increasingly by human settlements in hilly regions. Geoinformatics enables stakeholders to gather, analyse, and visualize spatial data, providing valuable insights into the interactions between human activities and the environment. The case studies and examples in the form of book chapters demonstrate the diverse applications of geoinformatics in hilly regions, including terrain analysis, natural resource management, environmental monitoring, disaster risk management, and climate change vulnerability assessment. By leveraging spatial data and advanced analytical techniques, geoinformatics facilitates informed decision-making for sustainable development in hilly terrains in general and that of human settlements in particular. Further, the integration of geoinformatics into research is essential for promoting sustainable human settlements in hilly regions, mitigating the adverse impacts of urbanization, and safeguarding the ecological integrity and cultural heritage of these natural and cultural landscapes.
