Challenges in Adopting Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Vietnam: A Decade’s Perspective

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has significantly evolved in the Vietnamese construction industry for the past decade, transitioning from traditional computer-aided design to sophisticated BIM authoring tools like ArchiCAD and Revit. This technological shift gained legal recognition in 2016 with Vietnam’s “Project of applying BIM in construction activities and construction management” (2500/QD-TTg), aimed at enhancing cost-efficiency, reliability, transparency, and quality control in construction. Further, in March 2023, the Prime Minister’s roadmap (258/QD-TTg) mandated BIM usage in projects involving public investment, state capital, or public-private partnerships. Despite these initiatives, integrating BIM technologies and methods poses challenges exacerbated by a need for region-specific knowledge, particularly in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. This article identifies the primary challenges hindering BIM implementation in Vietnam, aiming to establish a stronger foundation for future BIM application in the region’s unique context. To achieve this, a study was conducted using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). This approach consolidates insights from eight major models to provide a comprehensive view of user acceptance and behavior toward technology. It highlights four key factors influencing usage intentions and behavior: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions. These factors were used to create an inquiry of the insights of 11 experts from the Vietnamese construction industry that gave new insights to the state of the adoption of BIM in Vietnam, and suggestions to the path forward for the emerging regions like southeast Asia.
