This chapter examines how shifting rhythms of economic time have shaped generational experiences in post-reform China. It identifies three broad phases: the tentative liberalization of the 1980s, the sustained economic expansion from 1992 to 2020, and the slowdown and rising uncertainty beginning around 2020. Each phase produced distinct material conditions, temporal expectations, and generational sensibilities. The uneven tempo of economic development—its alternating periods of politicization and depoliticization, acceleration and deceleration, openness and closure—has left enduring marks on aspirations, identities, and the moral economy of success.
