This chapter establishes the theoretical foundation of the book. It argues that China’s historical trajectory provides a distinctive and revealing context through which to advance sociological theories of generations. At the same time, adopting a generational lens offers new insights into the dynamics of China’s social change. The chapter reviews major sociological approaches to generational analysis and develops a dual-temporalities framework that captures the interplay between historical time and life time in shaping generational experience. It concludes by outlining the structure of the book and the analytical threads that connect the subsequent chapters.
