This chapter focuses on science fiction readers: who they are and what made them into readers; how they read and also reflect on their reading; whether and how they engage with science in and through fiction. Based on qualitative empirical research, we give an idea of the complex and varied ways in which a passion for reading science fiction is cultivated in individual readers, and how engaging with science though fiction is linked to identities, biographies and reading pleasures. We draw on email interviews with science fiction readers conducted by Amy C. Chambers. Our data offers rich insights into fiction readers’ biographies and the many kinds of texts that formed them. We show how science fiction readers are formed through relationships with families and teachers and examine where they learn to love science fiction—in the home, and in public spaces, including schools and libraries. We consider the role of iconic science fiction texts in generating an interest in science in fiction. Our readers also reflected in complex ways on their engagement with science in, around and through science fiction, complicating narratives of science engagement and expertise.
