摘要

The Banton burial cloth was recovered from Banton Island, Romblon in central Philippines in 1961. With a relative dating from the late 13th to the early 14th century, it is regarded as the oldest extant textile in the Philippines and cited as the earliest known example of Southeast Asian ikat. This attribution remains contested, due to the absence of direct dating on the cloth and DNA analysis of the materials used. This report aims to present the condition of the Banton cloth, revisit the conducted research on the cloth and associated material culture, and identify its past and current significance to museum studies. This study employs visual techniques, including microscopy, to analyse the fibres and weaving structures of the cloth. It is also compared with select textiles from the National Ethnographic Collection of the National Museum of the Philippines with similar dyeing and weaving techniques. Preliminary findings suggest a number of assertions that merit further investigation and may be advanced as provisional takeaways. These include the continuity of abaca weaving in Banton Island from the precolonial period through at least the 1970s; the sustained production of ikat woven abaca textiles among diverse communities in Mindanao from the precolonial period to the present; and the long-standing value of such textiles as markers of social status. Taken together, these observations provide a preliminary framework for future research on the Banton cloth and its broader cultural and historical contexts.
