Private Sector and AMR Containment

The private sector plays a pivotal role in global health systems, contributing significantly to healthcare delivery, innovation, and economic development. Its involvement in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is particularly crucial in low- and middle-income countries where private providers, laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies dominate service delivery. The sector supports infrastructure development, research, diagnostics, and awareness generation, while also complementing public sector gaps through public–private partnerships. In human health, private clinics influence antibiotic prescribing practices, and laboratories generate valuable surveillance data. In veterinary health, private practitioners, drug manufacturers, and service providers ensure animal care, herd management, and vaccine delivery, while also shaping antimicrobial use practices that are central to AMR containment. Environmentally, private industries can mitigate resistance risks by adopting sustainable manufacturing standards and reducing antibiotic discharge. Global initiatives, such as the Davos Compact on AMR, UCARE, the AMR Industry Alliance, and Investor Action on AMR, demonstrate structured private engagement. Despite challenges—such as profit orientation, weak regulation, and limited incentives—strengthening partnerships, harmonising policies, and fostering innovation are essential for leveraging the private sector’s strengths in safeguarding human, animal, and environmental health against AMR.
