Dialogues About Conscientização: Processes Towards Autonomy—Letter 3

  • Jorge Knijnik

摘要

Freire has always insisted that his pedagogical project could never be regarded as a universal response to educational problems. Instead, he proclaimed the need for local educators to develop their own pedagogical proposals for the issues they found in their own communities. This letter delves into two key concepts of the Freirean educational philosophy: conscientização and autonomy. It describes the experiences of a physical education teacher who engages in a Sports for Development and Peace program within a socially and economically marginalised community in the Global South, with the aim of empowering her learners. However, during the pedagogical process, the teacher learns that, despite the hardships of everyday life, the local people have a clear purpose in life: to protect their own culture against the influences of both colonisers and social saviours. Inspired by Freire’s praxis in Africa, the teacher immerses herself in a process of learning in and with the community, where she increases her critical consciousness and deepens her understanding of individual and communal autonomy.
