Challenges of Globalization and Regulation of Trade Unions in Bangladesh

Historically, trade unions have played a pivotal role in balancing “unequal power relations” in industrial relations by restraining the unlimited powers of employers, raising the voice for workers, representing and safeguarding the rights of workers and upholding international labor standards. This chapter argues that globalization, accompanied by the rapid growth of the global supply chain and a network of transnational actors, has challenged the traditional system of national labor governance, of which trade unions are the key actors. It critically analyzes the regulatory framework of trade unions and examines their activities, effectiveness, and problems they face in Bangladesh in protecting the rights and interests of workers. It concludes that trade unions must respond to the changing needs of globalization, the challenges of the technological changes like the increasing use of artificial intelligence in workplaces, build networking and solidarity with the international labor unions to draw strength in times of their crises and must be equipped with a greater level of bargaining power to negotiate with employers for ensuring the well-being of workers and to prevent exploitation.
