Global China Shaped by Local Realities

  • Jinghan Zeng

摘要

This chapter summarizes the book’s central argument that local contexts play a decisive role in shaping Confucius Institutes. In many cases, they are more influential than Chinese directives in determining operations, priorities, and outcomes—demonstrating that Global China is, in practice, shaped by local realities. The chapter also situates these arguments within the broader Global China literature, showing how this book challenges existing analyses of Confucius Institutes while advancing new perspectives in the field. Finally, it identifies areas that merit further study, including: (1) the complex role of Chinese stakeholders in Confucius Institutes, particularly their overlapping and diverse priorities; and (2) the evolving nature of the institutes, especially in the periods before and after the Confucius Institute Headquarters era. In doing so, it provides context for what to expect in the next volume.
