Physiological Traits

From an application-oriented perspective, crop science can be viewed as the systematic body of knowledge concerning the quantification, selection, and regulation of traits indicative of crop performance. The primary objective of crop physiology is to identify novel and applicable traits that can be utilized in crop breeding and management. As the concluding section of the textbook, this chapter begins with categorizing crop traits, followed by an elaborate exposition on a representative physiological trait, canopy temperature. Subsequently, it introduces the principles and applications of physiological breeding, along with phenotyping platforms for physiological traits. Ultimately, it underscores the paramount importance of prioritizing the exploration of novel traits for crop breeding and management through the integration of state-of-the-art AI technologies, using the leaf to panicle ratio (LPR) as an example.
