Canopy Structure and Function

The structure–function relationship delineates the interaction between the physical architecture and the functional roles of a biological system. Crop canopy refers to the aboveground organs within a population that actively exchange matter, energy, and information with the aerial environment. This chapter aims to clarify the structure–function relationship of the canopy, which is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms underlying crop yield and quality. The concepts of canopy structure and function are elaborately explained, together with the role of the microenvironment in mediating their relationship. The importance of cultivating a healthy canopy to promote a highly productive and environmentally sustainable crop industry is emphasized, and approaches, including genetic modification and chemical intervention, are outlined to achieve this goal. Finally, it underscores the necessity of crop modelling in bridging the gap between genomics and phenomics through the integration of structural and functional information across multiple levels.
