Bibliometric Analysis: the Use of Microbial Fuel Cells in Industrial Engineering

Between 2015 and 2025, the bibliometric analysis of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) in industrial engineering reveals significant growth in scientific production, solidifying their role in sustainable energy generation. Publication output peaked in 2023, driven by technological advances and rising investment. A total of 1,190 research articles focused on experimental optimization, while 461 reviews consolidated foundational knowledge and proposed new directions. Dominant themes include bioelectricity, wastewater treatment, and sustainability. Research diversification is evident in topics such as artificial intelligence applications, electrode material innovation, and the use of agro-industrial waste. Key contributors— Boas, Muñoz-Cupa, Prathiba, Gupta, and Sharma—have advanced the field through studies on electrogenic bacteria, energy conversion, and industrial scalability. Bioresource Technology, Renewable Energy, and Chemosphere stand out as primary journals for disseminating breakthroughs. Emerging trends point to the integration of optimization models, hybrid technologies, and AI to enhance MFC performance. This study maps the evolution of the field, offering insights for researchers and institutions aiming to scale applications for clean energy and sustainable engineering. The findings confirm MFCs’ growing potential for industrial use, resource recovery, and renewable energy development.
