Life Cycle Assessment of Kipevu 1 Diesel Power Plant

摘要

The main objective of this study was to establish the lifecycle impacts and performance of a grid connected diesel engine power plant commissioned in 1999 and retired in 2023. The study showed that the power plant experienced decline in operational performance indicators since its commissioning. The study recommends proper operation and maintenance of diesel power plants to ensure that they perform efficiently and minimize their impacts to the environment and enhance their economic performance and value. It is recommended that the retired facility can be converted to gas powered power plant which has less negative impacts with dual benefits of cost reduction and environmental impact mitigation making it technically feasible and economically compelling, potentially extending the plant’s operational lifespan while addressing both financial sustainability and environmental compliance requirements that are increasingly critical in Kenya’s evolving energy sector.
