A Framework for Life Cycle Assessment of Modular Construction in the UAE: A Literature-Based Analysis of Carbon Reduction Potential

While modular construction (MC) is recognized globally for its potential to reduce carbon emissions, its specific performance within the unique context of the UAE remains largely unquantified. Direct application of international Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) findings is often inadequate due to regional differences in climate, energy grids, and material supply chains. This paper addresses this gap by conducting a systematic literature review to synthesize global research on the LCA of MC and the integration of Circular Economy (CE) principles. Based on this synthesis, the paper proposes a conceptual framework tailored for evaluating residential buildings in the UAE. The study presents a preliminary analysis, hypothesizing the primary carbon hotspots and the potential effectiveness of CE strategies like Design for Disassembly (DfD). This framework serves as a foundational roadmap for future quantitative research and provides an evidence-based guide for stakeholders aiming to advance.
