Greenwashing versus Real Innovation: Systemic, Technological, and Governance Perspectives on Contemporary Sustainability Claims

The process of institutionalization of sustainability in corporate, financial and policy spheres has resulted in a paradoxical effect where, while practices of innovation geared towards sustainability have progressed, practices of greenwashing have also thrived in increased magnitude and sophistication. Greenwashing is the calculated practice of symbolically displaying environmental responsibility, making selective environmental and/or operational information look good or attractive, while covering up a total lack of real ecological impact. In contrast, true innovation in terms of sustainability is characterized by transformation (system level), measurable outcomes related to the environment, and integrating sustainability within organizational and governance structures. This chapter is an in-depth and interdisciplinary analysis of the difference between greenwashing and genuine innovation and yields a synthesis of the knowledge across sustainability science, innovation theory, governance studies and digital systems research. It critically examines the structural forces that facilitate the possibilities for greenwashing, such as information asymmetry, patch regulation, financialization of ESG metrics and poor accountability mechanisms. The chapter goes further to explore the role of advanced digital technologies-including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and blockchain-as dual use tools that have the potential to either enable real sustainability transformation or strengthen symbolic compliance. In so doing and by developing an integrated analytical framework-based on the principles of measurement integrity, system boundaries, governance alignment and orientation to time—this work provides a sound basis for assessing claims of sustainability at an industry level.
