Corpus Literacy for Novice Users: Web Concordancers

This chapter and Chaps. 3 and 4 of this book introduce online corpus tools tailored for pre- and in-service language teachers, aiming to enhance Corpus Literacy (CL). Each chapter offers foundational knowledge, including tool overviews, usage prerequisites, and practical search functions, supported by video tutorials and hands-on exercises. Arranged by ease of use, this chapter introduces four recently developed corpus websites designed to meet the evolving needs of language teachers and learners new to corpus linguistics and DDL. Each section begins with an overview of the tool’s functions, development background, and design rationale. The chapter starts with Sketch Engine for Language Learning (SKELL), offering guided instruction on its three core search functions. VersaText follows, showcasing its user-uploaded corpus analysis features, including concordance views, word clouds, and semantic profiling. CorpusMate is then presented as a student-friendly tool with intuitive search engine and streamlined interface for discipline-based filtering, ideal for younger or less experienced learners. Netspeak is highlighted for its efficient retrieval of authentic language examples, especially for its extensive use of wildcard queries. Each section includes hands-on exercises to reinforce learning and encourage practical application. Together, these tools expand teachers’ corpus literacy and provide versatile resources for integrating data-driven language instruction across varied educational contexts.
