The Consequences of the U.S. “Maximum Pressure” Strategy Against China

On July 6, 2018, the Trump administration initiated a trade dispute with China, forcing China to fight back in kind and triggering a confrontation within the trade systems between the world’s two largest economies today. A little earlier before that, facing the protectionist actions of the powerful neighbor, the United States, Canada, which could no longer tolerate it, launched the most aggressive trade actions since World War II. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that Canada had no choice but to retaliate and called on all sectors in Canada to support the government in imposing retaliatory tariffs on the United States. Subsequently, the more shocking trade war between the United States and the European Union ultimately became inevitable. Almost any country other than the United States had to be prepared to fend off the Trump administration, in an attempt to minimize the impact and harm caused by the biggest variable in today’s world political and economic order to their own countries.
