A Critical Analysis in Protecting and Promoting Heritage, Authenticity, and Integrity of Robben Island World Heritage Site

Robben Island’s significance is derived from its historical, symbolic, and physical environment. It has served as a site of oppression, socio-cultural control, and resistance, as well as a symbol of resilience, hope, transformation, and human dignity. Today, it functions as a place of education and pilgrimage. Its uniqueness lies in its rich intangible cultural heritage, which is closely interwoven with the preservation of its tangible assets, including movable and immovable heritage, and biodiversity. By conserving these tangible elements, it simultaneously safeguard the symbolic and cultural meanings embedded in the site. This chapter critically examines how the Robben Island Museum (RIM) continues to research, protect, and retain its authenticity and integrity within a highly contested and symbolically charged landscape. The discussion highlights several key projects undertaken by RIM over the years to uphold its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). It also explores the challenges encountered in maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the site, alongside strategies developed to mitigate these threats.
