Exploring the Role of Bio-Inspired Designs for Ecosystem Services in Built Environments

Through pollution, biodiversity loss, climate change, and other effects, urbanization has a major detrimental influence on ecosystems and the services they provide. This necessitates finding solutions that lessen the harm that the built environment causes to the natural environment. This study investigates how bio-inspired designs contribute to or improve ecosystem services, such as water management, energy provision, climate regulation, and purification. This study analyzes different real-world case studies at various urban scales concerning climate and bio-inspired design, along with the potential ecosystem services they can provide. The findings indicate that while energy and water provisioning are the most prevalent provisioning services, climate regulation and purification are the most common regulating services, while other services like food and raw materials are fairly rare. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of bio-inspired designs and their potential to increase ecosystem services on a range of scales, contributing to more resilient and sustainable built environments.
