Resistance and Memories of a Brazilian Indigenous Community in the Participatory and Intercultural Confrontation of the Climate Emergency

This chapter presents the construction of a participatory research conducted with a Guarani Mbya Indigenous community in Brazil, within their territory. A central element highlighted is the alignment of interculturality with an educommunicative perspective, as a tool for socio-environmental transformation. The research involved training indigenous youth in audiovisual production as a practice of engagement regarding socio-environmental issues, documenting the memories and narratives of the community leaders and members. These productions treat the indigenous worldview and the struggle for territory as the foundations for socio-environmental justice. Traditional memory and narratives bring indigenous worldviews to light as an action to confront climate change. Intercultural dialogues fostered through educommunicative practices are fundamental for formative processes that enable social actors to act and engage within their communities. The study highlights both the challenges experienced by the indigenous community and the construction of pathways of resistance through narratives that emphasize traditions, knowledge, and territorial practices as strengths in facing the climate emergency. The results lead us to perceive the existing divergences between dominant worldviews and those of this traditional community.
