Community Climate Education for the Transition from the Mundane to the Ecosocial Utopia

This chapter presents the trajectory and outcomes of the community-based climate education initiative “Decarbonize! ‘Cause that’s no small feat” developed in Galicia from 2017 onwards. Originally designed to address the climate emergency with adult populations, the project evolved through continuous pedagogical reflection, methodological adaptation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Grounded in the theory of social representations, the initiative aims to reduce the social and psychological distance between climate change and everyday life, while fostering community resilience and action. Through participatory workshops, emotional engagement and collective decision-making; diverse groups —predominantly women and older adults— explored the links between climate issues and their daily lives. Over time, the initiative expanded to include intergenerational dynamics, gender-focused interventions, risk management strategies and the use of artistic narratives such as theatre and audiovisual media. The findings emphasize the importance of community engagement, affective pedagogies and utopian imagination in promoting critical and transformative climate change education that empower citizens and strengthen the social fabric necessary to address the climate crisis.
