ESenRED, Organizing Schools Towards Education for Climate Emergency

ESenRED (Escuelas hacia la Sostenibilidad en Red/Schools towards Sustainability Network) was created in 2011 as a network of networks of non-university educational institutions in Spain that works to make environmental education and sustainability the cornerstones of their pedagogical projects. This network unites networks of initiatives of public administrations (Autonomous Communities, City Councils, Provincial Councils, etc.) and it is organised as a community of practices based on cooperative networking to promote the culture of sustainability in educational centres, enhancing the leading role of students via different actions and programmes. Its main actions are the seminar of technical staff of the networks, the teachers’ symposium and the Let’s Take Care of the Planet Youth Conference (Confint). The main keys to these actions are: working with real and local eco-social problems linked to the climate emergency; the leading role of students in the teaching-learning process and their eco-social empowerment; the implementation of participatory research-action projects; and real and direct intervention in eco-social situations in the immediate school or local surroundings, especially for climate change mitigation, adaptation or communication actions.
