Aqua Vascular Tower: A Biomimetic Approach to Climate-Resilient Vertical Architecture in Dense Urban Settings

As cities continue to urbanize rapidly, they face mounting challenges related to climate change, environmental degradation, and the scarcity of open space. This chapter introduces the Aqua Vascular Tower, a conceptual high-rise inspired by the human cardiovascular system and designed to function as a self-sustaining vertical ecosystem within dense urban environments. The project is set in Singapore, a city-state known for its high population density, abundant rainfall, solar exposure, and limited horizontal green space. In this context, the tower offers an ecological design approach that integrates environmental sustainability, architectural innovation, and social resilience. A key feature of the tower is its vessel-like façade, which works much like human blood vessels. This living facade mimics vascular circulation, not only symbolically, but functionally by collecting, filtering, and redistributing rainwater for building-wide reuse. Given Singapore’s 2400 mm of annual rainfall and 75–95% relative humidity, the tower’s facade system offers substantial potential for passive water collection, contributing to reduced dependence on municipal supplies. Similar to how blood moves oxygen and nutrients through the body, the tower circulates air, water, and light throughout its height. Important strategies include vertical gardens that provide passive cooling and absorb carbon, rainwater harvesting for sustainable water use, and natural daylighting to reduce energy consumption. The building’s tapered, rounded shape, informed by fluid dynamics, helps reduce wind pressure and improve stability, crucial for tall structures. This chapter presents the Aqua Vascular Tower as a model for future high-density developments that require innovative responses to rising temperatures, poor air quality, and diminishing public space. The proposal also serves as a breathing space for residents through embedded public parks in vertical form, promoting physical and mental well-being in constrained cities. Supported by conceptual analysis, form generation logic, and climate-responsive strategies, the project contributes to emerging discourse on nature-based solutions, adaptive architecture, and climate-resilient urban futures. By merging form, function, and ecological performance, the Aqua Vascular Tower demonstrates the potential of biomimetic design to transform vertical architecture into a living, responsive infrastructure, offering a replicable model for sustainable and climate-adaptive urban futures.
