Potential Strategies for Green Building Technology Adoption: Empirical Insights for Climate-Resilient Urban Development in Construction Sector

Urban resilience in the face of accelerating climate change requires a fundamental shift in how built environments are designed and managed. Green Building Technologies (GBTs) have emerged as critical tools for reducing the environmental impact of construction and enhancing the adaptive capacity of cities. However, the successful diffusion of GBTs remains a challenge, especially in developing economies. This chapter explores key strategic enablers that promote the adoption of green building technologies, using empirical evidence from Pakistan's construction sector—a region facing acute urban environmental pressures. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire survey administered to 349 construction industry stakeholders, including developers, architects, engineers, and urban planners. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the relationship between potential strategic interventions and GBT adoption. The findings highlight five statistically significant strategies: (1) awards and acknowledgment for sustainability efforts, (2) educational initiatives and R&D support, (3) financial incentives and subsidies, (4) government-imposed green building standards and regulations, and (5) public awareness campaigns and publicity programs. The research presents a stakeholder-driven framework for policy and practice that cities can adopt to accelerate GBT integration into mainstream urban development. This chapter contributes to the discourse on climate-resilient cities by identifying actionable strategies that facilitate the systemic transition toward sustainable construction practices. The insights derived not only guide local urban development policies but also serve as a blueprint for other rapidly urbanizing regions facing similar sustainability challenges. In doing so, the study aligns with global climate resilience goals and offers a practical roadmap for scaling up green technologies in the built environment.
