Camels in Their Environment: Symbiosis and the Extremes

This chapter examines the remarkable adaptations that enable camels to survive and remain productive in arid and semiarid environments. It describes the extreme climatic conditions of desert ecosystems characterized by high temperatures, low and irregular rainfall, and sparse vegetation, and their effects on plant life and forage quality. The chapter highlights the camel’s unique anatomical, physiological, and behavioral adaptations, including thermoregulation, water conservation, and the efficient utilization of low-quality, fibrous feed resources. These adaptations allow camels to maintain homeostasis, withstand dehydration, and exploit widely dispersed resources. Beyond survival, the camel plays a significant ecological role by promoting vegetation regeneration, dispersing seeds, reducing grazing pressure through its ambulatory feeding behavior, and contributing less to greenhouse gas emissions compared to other ruminants. The chapter also discusses camel health within environmental and management contexts, emphasizing the importance of ecopathological approaches. Finally, it considers the implications of intensifying camel production systems and highlights the need to balance productivity with ecological sustainability in fragile desert ecosystems.
