Cities Can No Longer Outsmart Nature: Designing with Ecological Systems in the Climate era

The conceptual underpinnings of nature-based and climatic/climate-responsive design for urban systems are established in this introductory chapter, which makes the case that traditional, engineering-led approaches to urban development are increasingly inadequate in the face of growing climatic uncertainties. It promotes the idea that cities need to change from control and resistance systems to ones that allow for transformative adaptation and coexistence with natural processes. With a focus on water-sensitive tactics and ecosystem integration, the chapter presents nature-based and climate-responsive design as an operational framework capable of reorganizing urban systems across scales. It highlights the significance of context-driven and practice-oriented solutions by introducing a two-part structure that progresses from community-scale interventions to more comprehensive inter-scalar and coastal resilience approaches. The chapter describes how the book advances practical, multi-scale paths for sustainable urban futures based on ecological intelligence and design innovation by linking theory, policy, and practice.
