Clusters, Competition, and Real Innovation

China’s production system is characterized by industrial clusters focused on one industry or a group of related industries. Companies within these clusters are highly competitive amongst themselves, but they are at the same time suppliers and customers. They are learning machines, able to adapt quickly. The clusters are able to maintain competitiveness while also achieving economies of scale and scope. These clusters are likely to be first at applying AI to production.
