Cities in China have been designed to provide a convenient and livable urban environment. In the past 15 years, the government has invested in a very extensive system of parks and public transportation. This is part of an overall plan to reduce the cost of living, thus effectively raising the wages of average people. It works partly because many Chinese have a sense of community that greatly reduces crime and promotes social capital.
