The Influence of Different Survey Tools and Measurement Intervals on Borehole Position Uncertainty

In the field of drilling design, determining borehole position uncertainty is crucial for ensuring safety. The choice of various measurement tools and survey intervals significantly impacts both survey design and the overall drilling design strategy. This study examines the survey error outcomes for different wellbore survey types under various survey interval configurations, utilizing three types of survey tools and their combinations. Their influences are compared, and measurement tools, methods, and intervals are recommended for a real—world anti—cllision survey design case. The findings indicate that appropriately increasing the density of measurement intervals can substantially reduce wellbore survey uncertainty. In scenarios involving anti-collision risks, performing gyroscopic distance measurements in low-angle borehole sections is essential, as it offers greater flexibility in wellbore survey design. This study focuses on two key elements: different measuring tools and survey intervals. Proper application of these elements can decrease the complexity of design tasks and improve safety, offering valuable insights for drilling engineers during the design phase.
