Development and Application of a Quick Installation Tool for Wellhead Plug Valves

During secondary well control operations, the rapid installation of a plug valve is critical to ensuring drilling well control safety. When splashing or leakage occurs at the wellhead, timely installation can effectively prevent major accidents such as fires, explosions, and personnel poisoning caused by blowouts. To address the difficulties and time-consuming process of installing plug valves during overflow situations at drilling sites in the Tarim Oilfield, a quick installation tool for wellhead plug valves has been developed. This tool features a simple structure, compact size, and the ability to achieve rapid installation and fixation through a quick-locking device. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that the tool enables quick engagement of the plug valve, forced downward pressure, and rapid detachment after successful installation. Field applications at a well in the Tarim Oilfield achieved an average overflow installation time of less than 2 min. The successful development of this tool significantly reduces the risk of prolonged installation failures and provides an effective solution for rapid wellhead safety control in emergencies, with notable results. It holds broad prospects for domestic promotion and application.
