Gender-Based Discrimination in Sports: Examining through the Lens of LGBTQ+ Fans

Gender-based discrimination remains deeply embedded in sports culture, influencing both athlete experiences and fan interactions. This study explores the perceptions of homosexual sports fans regarding discrimination that is faced by homosexual players and those who promote gender-based inclusivity through different activities and interviews in different sports. By using a qualitative research design, a semi-structured interview was conducted to collect perceptions of homosexual sports fans who follow sports on a regular basis. Participants shared their view on fan reactions, peer behaviour, and initiatives taken by the sports organisations and their effect on homosexual athletics both on and off the pitch. Open, axial, and focus coding were used to analyse the data. This research also examines how the sports organisations, the governing bodies, and the social movements are responding to gender-based prejudice and whether or not existing policies effectively address the prejudice and discrimination in stadiums and on the Internet. This research hopes to contribute to increasing talk of diversity and inclusion within sport. The findings will provide recommendations to policymakers on how to establish safe space for all fans and players, bridging the gap between existing policies and real-life experiences.
