摘要

Sport is increasingly recognized as a social and cultural resource for advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, academic discussions on sport and development have largely focused on globalized games, leaving traditional and indigenous practices underexplored. Mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport grounded in physical discipline, balance, and cultural heritage, represents an important yet overlooked dimension of this discourse. This chapter examines the contribution of Mallakhamb to sustainable development through the perspectives of key stakeholders. The chapter draws on a descriptive and exploratory study based on primary data collected from parents and community members, athletes, and coaches across selected regions of Maharashtra. Using structured survey responses alongside qualitative reflections, the analysis explores perceived benefits, challenges, and support needs associated with Mallakhamb practice. The findings suggest that Mallakhamb contributes positively to physical health, mental well-being, discipline, and life skills, while also supporting gender inclusion, cultural continuity, and social cohesion. Stakeholders further identify emerging educational and livelihood opportunities, alongside persistent challenges related to infrastructure, financial support, and gender-related constraints. Overall, the chapter positions Mallakhamb as a meaningful contributor to multiple SDGs, highlighting the relevance of traditional sports within contemporary development frameworks.
