Creating Ecosystems for the African Context: Companies’ Perspectives on Cooperation with Educational Institutions

The 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and 5th Industrial Revolution (5IR) should be harnessed to create new learning ecosystems that align with future skills and workforce demands. This chapter examines the opportunities and challenges of developing such an ecosystem from an industrial point of view in the African context. This chapter includes insights from stakeholder interviews across different industry verticals (e.g., water and construction). The key findings underscore the significance of context-specific local approaches, e.g. utilising local expertise and supply vs demand considerations. Scalability, on the other hand, can be achieved via public–private partnerships and digital microlearning platforms. Findings also highlight the need to develop governance, resources, and digital infrastructure as well as the crucial importance of collaboration among diverse stakeholders. While the industry can operate with greater freedom within ecosystem frameworks than governmental stakeholders, industrial players have business-related aims that cannot be overlooked. A balanced approach is highly beneficial in creating learning ecosystems that are prepared for the future, embracing both innovation and inclusivity. Africa will be able to leapfrog to the benefits of 4IR and 5IR if constraints are addressed and current strengths are utilised.
