BIM (Building Information Modelling) Competence and Learning Management Systems to Enhance Engineering Education for Industry Needs

The construction industry is undergoing disruptive change driven by digitalisation and the widespread adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in engineering projects. BIM, defined as a shared digital representation of built assets, serves as both a technology and a paradigm shift for collaborative, data-driven project delivery. While tangible productivity and efficiency gains are well documented globally, the accelerated demand for “BIM-ready engineers” reveals a pressing gap in structured competence. This chapter addresses the BIM competence gap by introducing a comprehensive BIM Competence Management System (CMS), rooted in a three-tiered framework: (1) Foundational competences focused on BIM literacy, open-source tool proficiency, and core standards for immediate upskilling; (2) Intermediate application institutionalising role-based training and contextualised national guidelines within vocational and higher education; and (3) Advanced ecosystem development through standardised certifications, professional specialisations, and regional BIM hubs. Drawing from Finnish experiences and empirical findings from African contexts, the chapter demonstrates how adapting modular Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) frameworks, mobile-first training, and strategic partnerships can address current training fragmentation and barriers. The chapter provides recommendations for policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to include phased BIM mandates, subsidised BIM labs, curriculum integration, and regional innovation clusters. This systematic approach aims to equip Africa’s workforce for sustainable digital transformation, ensuring that BIM competences are both scalable and transferable across borders and professional roles.
